FEEDING YOUR BETTA

Betta Fish Feeding Guide
Imperial Bettas Aquatics
At Imperial Bettas Aquatics, we believe that great care starts with great nutrition.
Feeding your Betta the right foods — in the right amounts — keeps them vibrant, active, and healthy for years to come.
This guide explains how, what, and when to feed your Betta to ensure they thrive in your aquarium.
How Often to Feed Your Betta
Adult Betta fish should be fed once or twice daily in small portions.
A Betta’s stomach is about the size of its eye, so overfeeding is easy to do and can lead to bloating or water quality issues.
Feeding schedule example:
Morning: Small meal (2–3 pellets or equivalent)
Evening: Light meal or treat (1–2 pellets, or live/frozen food)
💤 Fasting Tip: Allow your Betta one “fasting day” per week (no food).
This helps clear their digestive system and prevents constipation.
What to Feed Your Betta
Bettas are carnivorous, meaning they thrive on a protein-rich diet.
We recommend feeding a variety of high-quality foods to mimic their natural diet.
💠 Staple Foods
Betta Pellets: A complete daily food, ideally with at least 40% protein content.
Betta Flakes: Good for variety, though pellets are usually easier to portion correctly.
🪱 Treat Foods (2–3 times per week)
Frozen or Live Bloodworms
Brine Shrimp
Daphnia (water fleas)
Micro worms or Mosquito Larvae (seasonal or cultured)
These boost colour, enhance energy, and provide mental stimulation during feeding.
🧊 Always thaw frozen foods before feeding to avoid temperature shock.
Foods to Avoid
Not all fish food is suitable for Bettas. Avoid:
Generic tropical flakes (often too low in protein)
Large pellets (may cause choking)
Overuse of freeze-dried foods (can expand in the stomach if not pre-soaked)
Human foods like bread, meat, or vegetables — these are harmful to fish.
Feeding Tips for a Healthy Tank
Feed only what your Betta can eat in 1–2 minutes.
Remove any uneaten food to prevent ammonia build-up.
Monitor your Betta’s belly — it should look gently rounded, not swollen.
Adjust feeding during colder months if your tank temperature drops (their metabolism slows).
Enhancing Colour & Health
To bring out your Betta’s natural colours, include foods rich in carotenoids and spirulina.
Brands offering “colour-enhancing” Betta pellets can safely intensify reds, blues, and purples over time.
Regular water changes and proper nutrition go hand in hand — a clean tank keeps your Betta’s appetite strong and colours bright.
Our Recommendation
At Imperial Bettas Aquatics, we feed all our Bettas a varied rotation of high-protein pellets, frozen brine shrimp, and daphnia, ensuring strong growth, vivid colour, and .optimal health.
